Development and filming

CBS had originally planned to only air one installment of The Amazing Race (Season 12) in the 2007-08 season, but due to the 2007-2008 Writers Guild of America strike, CBS ordered a 13th installment as a replacement for programs affected by the strike. CBS greenlit the 13th installment on December 9, 2007. Race locations were scouted in January 2008 and filming took place between April and May 2008.

Filming for the The Amazing Race 13 lasted for 23 days and covered nearly 40,000 miles. The season spanned eight countries in five continents, and visited some far-flung locales never before seen on the show, including Bolivia, Cambodia, and Kazakhstan. Brazil, New Zealand, India, and Russia were also listed as race destinations. This is only the second Race (after the tenth) to circumnavigate the world in a westward direction.

In promotional materials aired before the Race began, CBS revealed that one team made "an unprecedented mistake that ultimately prohibit[ed] them from joining their fellow Racers at the finish line." This "unprecedented mistake" was revealed to be Toni & Dallas misplacing Dallas' passport and all their money while doing the roadblock on the penultimate leg.

Applications for The Amazing Race 13 were due on November 27, 2007. Semi-finalist interviews were held in December 2007 and January 2008 and final casting interviews took place in February 2008, in Los Angeles, California.

The cast featured a pair of fraternity brothers, a team of married hippies, and a retired NFL player hoping to reconnect with his estranged wife while on the Race.[9]

The show also featured John Keoghan, host Phil Keoghan's father, as the local greeter at Te Puke in Keoghan's native New Zealand.[12]

CBS heavily promoted the new season, including placing advertising on the top of three hangar buildings at Los Angeles International Airport prior to the premiere.[13] Unlike other seasons, CBS has provided a location map to viewers of where the Race will be traveling prior to the start of the season.

    * Note 1: Mark & Bill arrived in 8th on Leg 3 but were issued a 30 minute penalty for taking a taxi instead of going on foot during the Detour. The only other remaining team (Kelly & Christy) arrived during this penalty time, so Mark & Bill dropped to last place and were eliminated.
    * Note 2: Terence & Sarah arrived 3rd, but were penalized for speeding. A 30 minute penalty was assessed at the start of the following leg, dropping their placement to 5th.
    * Note 3: Andrew & Dan arrived 4th, but took a taxi to the Pit Stop instead of going on foot. They were asked to go back to the end of the Detour and walk back to the Pit Stop. This did not affect their placement.
    * Note 4: Ken & Tina arrived 3rd, but had missed the clue directing them to the Pit Stop, having arrived there by chance while searching for the clue. They were asked to go back and retrieve their missed clue at the end of the Detour and return to the Pit Stop. This did not affect their placement.
    * Note 5: Toni & Dallas were initially denied their clue at the Detour starting point for taking the Metro instead of a taxi, and were required to go back to the end of the Roadblock and return to the Detour starting point via taxi. After all the other teams had checked in at the Pit Stop, Phil eliminated them while they were still performing the Detour.

    * Red means the team was eliminated.
    * Green means the team won the Fast Forward clue. A green-colored leg number indicates that the Fast Forward was available for that leg but not used.
    * An underlined Blue team's placement means the team came in last on a non-elimination leg and were not eliminated. The penalty for being last on a non-elimination leg is currently unknown.

Elimination Station

The first five teams eliminated were sequestered at a villa in Acapulco, Mexico to await the finale. Subsequent eliminated teams telephoned the villa to inform the teams at the villa of their elimination, but continued to run the race as decoys to throw off spoilers to the final outcome of the race.

CBS posted short videos on its website after each episode aired in the Pacific Time Zone to show the eliminated teams interacting at the villa.

    * After Leg 1, Anita & Arthur were the first team eliminated and were sent to the villa first. They expressed their disappointment for being eliminated so early but were also appreciative of their surroundings and grateful that they could live in the lap of luxury in the villa.
    * After Leg 2, Anthony & Stephanie were the second team eliminated and were sent to the villa next. Anita & Arthur were surprised but excited that it was them and Anthony & Stephanie felt welcomed by Anita & Arthur and felt less depressed over their own elimination. Over a meal, they predicted that Terence & Sarah will win the race. The two teams then went out of the villa and enjoyed the sights and sounds of Acapulco.
    * After Leg 3, Mark & Bill became the third team eliminated and sent to the villa. They were glad that the two teams there were shocked and saddened to hear that they were eliminated. As they retold their story on how they were eliminated, they found Mexican wrestling masks in their room in the villa. The 3 teams were later brought, at night, to a luchadore exhibition where Anthony & Stephanie had a lack of interest and left earlier to roam the streets instead.
    * After Leg 4, Marisa & Brooke were the fourth team eliminated and were sent to the villa. They were excited on how lavish the villa was. They then discussed what happened in New Zealand before all 4 teams went into town and Anthony, Stephanie and Bill did a bungee jump as the others watched on.
    * After Leg 5, Aja & Ty became the fifth team eliminated and sent to the villa. But before they arrived, the first 4 eliminated teams went to the market and then prepared their own lunch to celebrate the arrival of the fifth team. The teams were surprised that it was Aja & Ty, who filled them in on what has happened in the race. After the meal, Anthony did not offer to help clean up, leaving Stephanie embarrassed. Meanwhile, Ty feels awkward to not be on the race and predicts that Andrew & Dan will be the next team eliminated.
    * Leg 6 was a non-elimination leg. The five eliminated teams went to the beach where they encountered a weird individual who staged a "performance" for the teams in the ocean. There were mixed reactions from the teams with Anita being thrilled and filled with admiration while Ty was having difficulty understanding the different lifestyle of the people in Mexico.
    * After Leg 7, Kelly & Christy were the sixth team eliminated but were not sent to the villa. They called in during the wee hours of Acapulco where the first five eliminated teams awaited their call. They recalled their horrifying "Holi Festival" Roadblock experience and gave them an update on what had happened on the race.
    * After Leg 8, Terence & Sarah were the seventh team eliminated but were not sent to the villa. Before the phone call, the eliminated teams went to "La Quebrada" to see cliffdivers jumping down to the sea. After that, they gave opinions on who will be eliminated next. Most of them thought it was Andrew & Dan. They were all shocked when Terence & Sarah called in as several teams were rooting for them.
    * Leg 9 was a non-elimination leg. While Aja & Ty have a minor tiff with each other, Marisa & Brooke struggle to make toast. Anthony starts complaining about how slow time is passing in the Villa. All in all, most of the sequestered teams reveal that they are missing home and are eager to return to their normal lives. Most of them also predict and want Toni & Dallas and Ken & Tina to win the race.
    * After Leg 10, Toni & Dallas were the eighth and final team to be eliminated. The first five eliminated teams packed up to head for the Finish Line location. As they packed to leave the villa, each team recalled their experience with each other at the villa and expressed their excitement for returning home soon.
     Leg 11 was the final leg of The Amazing Race 13. The five sequestered teams arrived in Portland, Oregon, where they checked in to a hotel which is close to the Finish Line site and reunited with Terence & Sarah first. The eliminated teams were waiting for a phone call to see who was eliminated. Toni & Dallas then called the six teams at the hotel, breaking the news that they had been eliminated and would most likely will not be joining them at the Finish Line due to their passport mishap. The teams then went to the Finish Line site, where they reunited with Kelly & Christy, and some of the teams again expressed who they wanted to win. Mark & Bill were hoping that it would be Ken & Tina that would win the Amazing Race but they figure it was Nick & Starr that won the Amazing Race. Nick & Starr express their joy and disbelief at winning the Race, while Ken & Tina express their disappointment but vow to make their marriage work. Andrew & Dan express their elation at making it to third place.

    * Moscow (Fallen Monument Park)
    * Moscow (Sokolniki Park)

The Roadblock was to count the number of Vladimir Lenin and Joseph Stalin statues in the park, then proceed to a local bookstore. The numbers of Lenin and Stalin statues were to be the tens and ones digits, respectively, of a number that they then had to tell the bookstore manager; if incorrect, a 10 minute penalty would be assessed before another guess could be made. If correct, the team member would receive a copy of The Master and Margarita by Mikhail Bulgakov, and flip to the page of the correct answer (62) to find a clue about their next destination - Bulgakov's flat - where their teammate and next clue would be waiting. The Detour was a choice between Ride the Rails or Ride the Lines. In Ride the Rails, teams had to travel by the Moscow Metro from Sokolniki to Ulitsa 1905 Goda where they could pick up a samsa from a marked snack stand. The wrapper directed them to go to Kitay-Gorod and give the samsa to a babushka near the statue of Saints Cyril and Methodius in Slavyanskaya Square. In Ride the Lines, teams had to travel by trolleybus from Sokolniki to Krasnoselskaya Station to find a key maker who would give them a key. The keytag directed them to Rizhskaya Station where their key would open up a locker. At the end of both Detours, teams received a photo of the VDNKh Metro Station and were told to search the grounds of the station to find their next clue. This leg's Speed Bump required Andrew and Dan to learn, and then perform a traditional Russian dance to the satisfaction of the choreographer.

Additional task

    * Teams had to search the submarine amongst the crew members for the actor who appeared in the film The Hunt for Red October.

Leg 11 (Russia → United States)
      Moscow (Domodedovo International Airport) to Portland, Oregon, USA (Portland International Airport)
    * Newberg (Tilikum Retreat Center)
    * Cascade Locks (Bridge of the Gods)
    * Portland (Portland Building)
    * Portland (Alder Street cart pod)
    * Portland (Voodoo Doughnut)
    * Portland (Pittock Mansion) (Finish Line)

In this Detour, teams chose from either High & Dry or Low & Wet. In High & Dry, teams had to climb up a tree to a certain height where they had to balance themselves on a log which they moved to the end of to jump and each grab a half of their next clue. In Low & Wet, teams had to make their way on foot on logs floating on the river, a distance of 800 feet and retrieve the clue from an island.

Additional tasks

    * Teams took a zipline from the Bridge of the Gods to a nearby island below. At the island, teams then did a memory challenge involving the previous ten legs. Teams were faced with a board with spaces numbered 1-10, each corresponding to a leg of the race. They were required to remove the covers from the spaces one at a time, in numerical order, to reveal the symbol of a Roadblock, Detour, Route Info, or Pit Stop, then search through a field of 150 identical clue boxes – each of which contained a picture depicting a task or location from the Race – for a picture depicting that specific task or location from that leg (for example, Leg 1 revealed the Route Info symbol, so teams had to look for a picture depicting the coffee cart at o Rei do Pernil). They were then required to insert the picture into the space on the board, where a green light on top of the space indicated that the picture was the correct one, and absence of a green light indicated they had to try again. Once all 10 spaces were correctly filled in, teams were allowed to retrieve the next clue from the parking lot.
    * At the Portland Building, teams were required to search for a dinosaur statue located in the Standard Building, adjacent to the Portland building, where the next clue box was located.
    * At the Alder Street cart pod, teams were required to search for the food cart selling ethnic food of the country of the last Pit Stop (Russia), where the proprietor would hand them the next clue.
    * The clue given at the Alder Street cart pod directed teams to the place where "the magic is in the hole", and left it to the teams to decipher that this was a reference to Voodoo Doughnut.
